Our Process
Every Shoal Creek Handyman job follows the same structured approach — from the first phone call to the final walkthrough. Here’s what you can expect when you hire us for home repair or maintenance work in Austin, TX.
Initial Contact & Scope Discussion
When you reach out to Shoal Creek Handyman, the first conversation is focused on understanding what you need done. James will ask about the specific issue, how long it has been present, whether there are any related symptoms (such as a sticking door that might indicate foundation movement rather than a simple hinge problem), and what the surrounding conditions look like. This diagnostic conversation helps identify root causes before any work is quoted — it's more useful than quoting a surface fix that won't hold.
For most jobs, this conversation is enough to provide a realistic estimate by phone or email. For more involved work, or when the scope depends on what's found once a wall is opened or a fixture removed, a brief on-site assessment is scheduled before a final number is given.
Clear, Written Estimate
Once the scope is understood, you receive a clear estimate that outlines what will be done, what materials are required, and what the total cost will be. There are no hidden fees or surprise add-ons. If the scope expands during the work — for example, if a drywall repair reveals moisture damage that needs addressing — you are contacted before additional work proceeds.
Austin homeowners should expect competitive, fair pricing. We keep overhead low as an owner-operated business, and that's reflected in the rates. We do not pad bids or upsell services that aren't needed.
Scheduling & Preparation
Jobs are scheduled around your availability within our working hours — Monday through Friday, 6:30 am to 9:30 pm, and weekends from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm. Appointments are confirmed in advance, and we notify you if anything changes.
Before arriving, materials are sourced. For standard repairs, common materials are kept on hand. For specific items — particular fixtures, matching trim profiles, or paint colors — we coordinate material sourcing in advance so the job runs efficiently and isn't interrupted by a mid-job supply run.
On-Site Assessment & Root Cause Diagnosis
Austin homes present specific challenges that inform how we work. The region's expansive clay soils cause seasonal foundation movement that manifests as sticking doors, cracked drywall, and misaligned windows. High summer temperatures and humidity affect curing times for sealants and patching materials. Older homes in neighborhoods like Bouldin Creek, Travis Heights, and Rosedale have different construction methods than newer builds in Round Rock or Cedar Park.
Before starting any repair, the area is assessed directly. This means checking whether a problem is structural or cosmetic, whether adjacent systems are involved, and whether the proposed repair is the right fix or a workaround for a deeper issue. We prefer doing the right repair once over doing a cosmetic patch twice.
Execution & Quality Standards
Work is performed with attention to the standards that make a repair actually hold. Drywall patches are feathered correctly so the transition isn't visible under paint. Caulk lines are clean and applied to properly prepped surfaces. Fixtures are level and securely mounted. Trim joints are tight. Painted surfaces are primed where needed and rolled without lap marks.
Work areas are protected before starting — drop cloths, tape, and surface protection where applicable. Materials and debris are cleaned up as part of the job, not left for you to deal with. Austin homeowners shouldn't have to spend time after a handyman visit cleaning up the workspace.
Final Walkthrough
When the work is complete, you walk through it together with James. This is not a formality — it's a genuine review of what was done. If something doesn't look right to you, it gets addressed before the visit ends. Questions about maintenance, what to watch for in the future, or how to handle related issues are answered directly.
Payment is collected at completion for most standard jobs. We accept check and digital payment methods. After the visit, if you notice anything that doesn't seem right with the work, reach out directly — we stand behind what we do.
